Choosing Music for your wedding

Choosing a wedding band?

If have been to a wedding recently and liked the live music then you have probably already got the business card of the wedding band you saw perform. That’s likely a very safe option when booking as you can vouch first hand for the band. However, we suggest you shop around as there are a great many bands out there that may be more suited to you when you are choosing wedding music.

There are endless websites out there offering lists of live wedding bands.
Websites can on occasions be misleading and remember a fancy site does not guarantee quality performers. You’ll get a good feel for who you are dealing with based on the responses you get. Professional bands, worth dealing with will be quick to reply, it will be personalised to your event and friendly.

Should I expect to see the band perform before I book them?

You can always ask. The band may have public performances coming up but do not expect or insist on any professional wedding bands inviting you to one of their performances.
Imagine how you would feel if a band turned up at your wedding with additional guests looking on?
Pro acts use pro live clips.
You can get a good feel for a band by simply watching their clips and by chatting to them.

What price should I pay?

Good live entertainment does come at a price, but it is well worth it for this one day of your life.

Your wedding day, for many, is the most important single in your life and you want everything to be right.
Rather than making a relatively small saving by booking your second choice, make sure you go with exactly what you want when you are choosing wedding music.

The live band is the biggest thing on show after the wedding dress and you’ll want them to look and sound great, be happy to be there and ready to entertain all of your guests.

A testimonial from a wedding gig I did.

YOU ALWAYS ANSWERED MY QUESTIONS WHICH WAS A BIG ISSUE WITH OTHER VENDORS.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for your performance at our wedding and all your hard work in the lead up to the day, (especially learning those songs for us).
Lots of people commented on how fantastic you were..Paul and I totally agree, both yourself and the other vendors made our wedding a day we will never forget as long as we live – it was a dream come true for both of us …everything was perfect.

Your performance was fantastic – great songs, great voice, you did a wonderful job MC’ing as well, exactly what we wanted for our wedding.

The website was great.
Everything I needed to know for choosing wedding music was on those pages. The wedding song list – I did not want to choose the reception songs, I thought it was great that a list of really good songs was already done (You had a great mix that I knew everyone would love).

After seeing you perform and from numerous email we could tell that you were very friendly, professional and was experienced (ie. had done weddings before). The price was extremely reasonable.

You are a great person to deal with, always responding to my emails very efficiently, you listened to what Paul and I wanted and incorporated those things and also had some great suggestions.

You always answered my questions which was a big issue with other vendors and generally just a nice down to earth person – what else could a bride/groom ask for ??
All our expectations were met. So many people at the wedding and also afterward have said to Paul and me how fantastic they thought you were – two of my cousins who are getting married next year asked for your web address and details !!

I hope we get to see you perform again, I will certainly be checking your website to look at your gig guide every now and again….

Take care and thank you so much once again – absolutely fantastic !!

Hornsby Inn – Fri 12 Mar

Hornsby Inn is a local venue for me – 5 mins drive from my house.

It’s a pleasure to play the local pub. I always have a fun time here.
Last Fri night was no exception.
Local lads Jack, Kieran, Scott, Jack and the lovely lass Nicky and her friend who works at the Inn are in the pic above.

These local mad cats are always up for a great time.
Shots, beer and shenanigans are the name of the game, for them , not me, maybe the occasional shot if they offer me one!

Jack the guy doing the ‘peace sign’ is a local lad from Hornsby Heights who has an unusual addiction to buying my cds, I think he owns about 4 copies now, just so I can write a new custom whacky message on the cover each time.
He bought another one last Fri and an extra one for his mate also called Jack ( far right side in the pic ) He’s also a ranga so I wrote – “hey ‘ginger balls’ you’re the best , luv Tim” on his CD.

Hornsby Inn is well run by local licence Andrew, who books great regular live music. Some of Sydney top rock and blues bands play there, such as the Steve Edmonds band and Stormcellar as well as a host of top Solos and Duos.

The pub boasts on their website – they provide some of the best pub feeds, cold beer and hospitality in the area. I tend to agree.

Its’ a real locals bar with some enthusiastic music lovers always there every weekend. Mad Simon always requests Creedence and Pink Floyd.

They have as part of the hotel the amazing Absolute Thai Restaurant as well as regular Aussie pub feeds.

Its a well set up venue for live music with a stage if the act wants it and permanent lighting installed.
They even turn the footy screen off behind the band and draw curtains over the turned off screen – now that is supporting live music. Footy down the other end and music down this end.

The staff are nice, the punters are cool and the vibe is fine, see you soon!

Elements Bar & Grill – Feb 14

Elements Bar & Grill is a spectacular venue in Darlinghurst.

I played here on New Years Eve 2020.
That was my first gig here – solo.

Of course being NYE it was a huge night.
Being an outdoor seating venue they had limited covid restrictions unlike most city venue in Dec 2020 when the person per square metre rules applied and were quite restrictive.

Valentines Day 2021 was a duo gig with the amazing Kelly Hope, who is a fantasist solo act in her own right.
Kelly & I teamed up for a duo gig which went really well.
I used my tiny BOSE S1 Pro speaker, which was powerful enough for the small space.

I’ve also acted as the booking agent ( my agency Crazy Horse Entertainment) for the music acts so far booked for Elements Bar & Grill.

So I supplied another awesome Male / female duo that played before us on Valentines day – The Paul Winn Duo with Natalie Carboni.

Two amazing solo acts in their own right. Both are well known Sydney acts.
Natalie is a Cruise Ship legend – tip piano bar girl having played don Cruise ship the world over. Crazy Horse got her into these gigs initially on the Carnival Cruise line a few years back.

The audience for Valentines day at Elements Bar and Grill

were a mix of inner city couples wanting an exclusive dining experience.
The venue offered special dining packages, several courses with a special heart shaped desert cake made for the occasion.

The venue really goes all out to create a total red carpet experience. The literally had a red carpet with the venue logo backdrop for couples to take great romantic pics to memorise the occasion.

I’d play here anytime as Navid and Kyle and all the staff are so polite, professional and pleasure to work for.

I’ll be back soon I’m sure.

Funeral – Memorial Service Gig – Feb 5

This was the most up-beat Funeral memorial service I’ve ever played.
The amazingly bubbly Desiree Hyde approached me to play for her Dad’s ‘Celebration Of Life’ at the Boronia Kitchen in Gladesville.

She wanted background music, not too sad as it was to be an up tone and positive celebration of life, rather than a sad memorial type service.

Boronia Kitchen is a spectacular venue with a street-front cafe and restaurant and a nice function room adjacent.

The staff is lovely and the kitchen made me a nice meal during one of my breaks.

Desiree’s family and close friends were really cheerful and enthusiastic and it actually turned into a real celebration with a little more than background music.
I played lots of classics in memory of her Dad, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash etc.

They had a lunch and were all singing and clapping.
Some of them even got some sneaky dancing in up the back so they wouldn’t be caught by any patrolling Covid Marshalls lol.

It was just a great happy Funeral memorial service lunch gig with a bunch of positive family and friends.

I was so glad to be part of a such celebratory occasion.

Desiree wrote a great testimonial for me…

“I booked Tim for my dad’s “celebration of life” and he was absolutely brilliant! Tim played fantastic songs and had all of us up clapping and singing along and dancing. He is a brilliant entertainer and I definitely recommend using Tim at your next event. We will be when we have our next work function which will be a Christmas in July!

I must have impressed the guests as I was asked to play a work Xmas function later in the year and also an upcoming Xmas in July gig.

Thanks Desiree, see you at another party soon!

Club Narooma – Sun Jan 3

Club Narooma and live music go hand in hand.
It’s a great live music venue. In summer they have live music every night in Jan – 7 nights a week!
I’ve been playing here for years now.
It is a beautiful venue in a wonderful part of the world, the South Coast NSW.

This was the second date of a 4 date South Coast tour.
I took my amazing girlfriend Michelle and we had a great time in Narooma.

It was a rainy Sunday during a Covid scare so not as busy as a typical summery day.
I posted on Facebook that I was playing solo here and my good friend Josh Manson from my band The Crowdies Show message me saying he was just up the road on holiday.
So I set up a mic and spare guitar for him and we did the entire gig as a duo.
Josh is an incredible harmony singer and just a great guy.

He bought his mum and their friends and his wife and daughter which made for a nice supportive audience.
Club Narooma is known as a live music venue because they have it all year round and a lot in summer.

The next day Michelle and I visited the quaint little town of Tilba. We bought incense and fudge and a hippie hat.
Then on the way back up the coast we stopped at one of my favourite coastal towns, Bodella.
I love the Hippie Sticks shop, its all tie -dye crazy clothes run by some cool old hippies.
I actually book some of the live music at Club Narooma via my agency Crazy Horse Entertainment and I like to send them to Hippie Sticks.
Many of them buy stuff.

Go and see the live music at Club Narooma.
The food is also spectacular and the staff is super friendly.

Huntlee Tavern – Sun Jan 10

Huntlee Tavern is a huge new hotel in Branxton.
First time I’d played here, booked by the amazing Chris Varley.

It is a country pub all on one level, very nicely renovated with a great stage for live music.
They have bands and solos and duos there every weekend.
There’s a huge floor to ceiling windows providing an excellent view of a gorgeous country vista.

The staff is friendly, well as the audience of course because they are country people.
Super down to earth and just down-home and nice.

A table near me asked for the usual country hits and when I played Chicken Fried by Zac Brown Band, one guy at the nearby table was suddenly in total glee and excitement.

He stood up dropped his pants and turned around to show me a 20cm tattoo on his thigh of Zac Brown’s face!
Nearby patrons showed a mix of horror at the half-naked heavily tattooed man and sheer excitement for him at how happy he was that I was playing a Zac Brown song!

It was this guy’s birthday, he was a slat of the earth guy, requesting songs and he asked me to play an original if I had any.
I played one, my song from the 90’s that I had on radio in NZ, called Perfect Memory.
Mid song his partner came up and bought 2 CDs.

I’m glad this big table of people were there, they were so enthusiastic and into the music it was just a great gig for me.
Amazing for a Sunday gig – which can often be very reserved and laid back.

Hopefully Mr. Varley rebooks me again at the Huntlee Tavern, it was a great first gig in a new venue.
